This dupatta was woven in Pochampally, Telangana. Pochampally is one of the three major ikat centers in India. The other two are located in Patan, Gujarat and Sambalpur, Orissa.
The word ikat is derived from the Malay word "mengikat" meaning to tie or to bind. Bundles of yarn are wrapped according to a predetermined pattern and when dyed, only the open parts take the color. When the yarns are woven, complex designs in brilliant colors emerge on the finished fabric.
