The Telia Rumal is a double Ikat weave. It derives its name from Tel(Oil) in Chirala, Guntur district where it was first woven in the 19th Century. The yarn was treated with a mixture of oil and castor ash before the weaving began. The word rumaal(handkerchief) was used because this was originally woven as a square piece of cloth to be used as a headgear for Arab travelers.
It was only in the 1950s that the weavers began weaving Telia Rumaal sarees but the designs were translated into dupattas and stoles only in last few years.
