Phulia and Shantipur are two of the most important centers for handloom weaving in West Bengal. Although Shantipur has a history dating back to almost 500 years, Phulia came into prominence much later.
After the partition, several skilled weavers from Dhaka settled in Phulia, with support from the government the region slowly emerged as a handloom weaving center.
This saree was handwoven by a traditional weaver from the Basak community in Phulia, West Bengal.
